Population structure of Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius) and its invasion impacts on the resident plant community in the grasslands of Nilgiris, India

We investigated age and size class structures of Scotch broom stands, and the effects of invasion on the native plant community, in the high-altitude grasslands of the Nilgiris, South India. Girth, height and age of broom stems were recorded. Native vegetation cover was assessed under broom and in the surrounding grasslands. Age was positively correlated with girth and height of broom. Middle-a...

Cytisus scoparius link - A natural antioxidant

BACKGROUND Recent investigations have shown that the antioxidant properties of plants could be correlated with oxidative stress defense and different human diseases. In this respect flavonoids and other polyphenolic compounds have gained the greatest attention. The plant Cytisus scoparius contains the main constituent of flavone and flavonals. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the in...

Ochrobactrum cytisi sp. nov., isolated from nodules of Cytisus scoparius in Spain.

Two strains named ESC1(T) and ESC5 were isolated from nodules of Cytisus scoparius growing in a Spanish soil. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene showed that these strains belong to the genus Ochrobactrum, their closest relatives being Ochrobactrum anthropi and Ochrobactrum lupini, with 100 and 99.9 % similarity to the respective type strains. Despite this high similarity, the results of...

Development of Cytisus scoparius L. at stand and individual level in a mid-elevation mountain of the French Massif Central

Cytisus scoparius (L.) is a common native species of the Chaîne des Puys, a mid-elevation volcanic mountain range of the French Massif Central. Widely used in the former traditional agricultural system, broom has now become an invasive species colonising open areas after grazing abandonment. This study quantifies variation in size as a function of age and local competition at both stand and ind...

Snowpack, fire, and forest disturbance: interactions affect montane invasions by non-native shrubs.

Montane regions worldwide have experienced relatively low plant invasion rates, a trend attributed to increased climatic severity, low rates of disturbance, and reduced propagule pressure relative to lowlands. Manipulative experiments at elevations above the invasive range of non-native species can clarify the relative contributions of these mechanisms to montane invasion resistance, yet such e...
